Rail Manager - Job Purpose: Accountable for the safe and efficient operations of the railway systems within the port and for the overall line management of the Railway Operations team ensuring everyone works in a safe manner to the relevant policies, regulations and guidelines.

Rail Manager - Main Duties


·Accountable for the safe and efficient running of the rail department providing 100 percent capability at all times.
·Accountable for operations and maintenance of the railway assets and infrastructure in accordance with all relevant internal and external policies, regulations and guidelines.
·Rail Manager to generate and collate management reports relevant to all railway and port operations.
·Responsible for the line management, health & safety, competency and training of the railway employees, ensuring all staff receive regular assessments and appropriate training to maintain occupational and company competency.
·Ensure all Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work are appropriate, current and relevant.
·Provide strategic planning and provide timely interventions.
·Provide expertise, advice and assistance with solutions to day to day running of rail including special projects.
·Manage the department budget including overtime, ensuring any expenditure is justified, compliant and propriety is observed.
·Ensure all stores and equipment are maintained, handled and controlled in accordance with all relevant internal and external policies, regulations and guidelines.
·Maintain all rolling stock and infrastructure in accordance with all relevant internal and external policies, regulations and guidelines to ensure maximum availability at all times.
·Represent SGL in external interaction, maintaining high levels of commercial acumen and political awareness.
·Report to the Operations Management Team.
·Provide the highest levels of customer service at all times.
·Contribute as a team member to ensure the port is a safe working environment.
·Complete all relevant documentation as required.
·Comply with all relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures (internal and external).
·Keep updated with external stakeholders (Visiting Rail business) policies and procedures.
·Undertake and pass any identified training course deemed necessary for the role.
·Undertake Continuing Professional Development.
·Strive to develop the department and drive efficiencies throughout in terms of H&S, HR and planning.
·Ensure that staff competences remain current whilst identifying training needs in line with legislation, regulations, policies and procedures (internal and external).
·Identify and take responsibility for the delivery of activities and/or projects required to satisfy Port Operations.
·Develop, review & improve procedures associated with the rail operations.
·Issue permits and passes in accordance with policies and procedures.
·Maintain site wide company standards and discipline amongst all rail staff.

Experience and knowledge of Rail Operations are essential as are line management skills. The understanding of health & safety legislation policies, regulations and guidelinesare also essential to this role.
