UK Automotive Salary Guide 2026/27

By Auto Skills UK | Research checked 2 October 2026

A useful automotive salary comparison starts with the role, location and working week. Compare guaranteed basic pay first, then assess bonus, overtime and benefits separately. This guide brings together published career ranges and examples of advertised Auto Skills UK vacancies to help employers and candidates ask the right questions.

It covers Dealership & Aftersales, Commercial Vehicle, and Bodyshop & Accident Repair. The figures are reference points for decisions in 2026/27, not a prediction of 2027 pay or a survey of salaries paid to everyone in the industry.

Published salary reference ranges

The National Careers Service publishes the following annual starter-to-experienced ranges. These are broad career profiles from England’s careers service, accessed in October 2026. The pages do not identify the figures as a 2026 earnings survey or provide a consistent breakdown of basic pay, bonus and overtime. Treat them as orientation, not as national medians or a ceiling on earnings. [S01][S02][S03][S04]

A single advert cannot establish the typical salary for a role or region. The difference between the Hainault MET example and the Kilmarnock panel example is not a measured regional premium: these are different jobs with different requirements.

Dealership and Aftersales

For a vehicle technician offer, ask how the workshop calculates bonus, what work contributes towards it and whether there is a settling-in arrangement. Request a written explanation of targets and the conditions attached to payment. For a service or parts advisor role, ask the same questions about individual, team and department measures.

The Stafford example separates £34,000 basic from its advertised OTE and lists manufacturer and hybrid/electric vehicle training. That is useful detail to request when comparing another offer, but the advert alone cannot establish what an individual will earn. [S05]

Employers should state the required diagnostic ability, manufacturer experience and responsibilities before deciding the salary bracket. Candidates should explain their relevant experience with specific examples, rather than treating a job title as proof that two positions are equivalent.

Commercial Vehicle

Compare the complete rota before comparing annual totals. Ask whether the advertised figure includes a shift allowance, contracted Saturdays or call-out payments, and whether overtime is optional. For mobile work, clarify the paid working day, travel arrangements and vehicle provision.

The Wigan LCV example specifies a 42.5 hour week, Monday to Friday, and a separate overtime rate. Those details allow a more useful comparison than the annual salary alone. Do not assume that an HGV, PSV or mobile technician role has the same hours or pay basis. [S07]

Bodyshop and Accident Repair

Define the actual work before benchmarking panel, paint, MET, prepper or vehicle damage assessor roles. Ask whether the vacancy combines several disciplines, which repair methods and equipment are involved, and how training will be provided. For bonus-based packages, request the rules on productivity, quality, rework and work allocation.

The cited Hainault MET advert offers a four day working option as well as a five day pattern. Compare the stated hours and breaks as well as the number of days, and confirm the agreed pattern in writing. [S08]

Compare offers on the same basis

Start with guaranteed annual basic pay divided by contracted paid hours over the year. This is a simple comparison tool; it does not value pension contributions, holiday entitlement or contingent bonus.

Worked example, using hypothetical offers: £40,000 divided by (40 hours × 52 weeks) is approximately £19.23 per contracted hour. £43,000 divided by (45 hours × 52 weeks) is approximately £18.38. The second offer pays more annually, but the first pays more for each contracted hour. Both calculations assume the stated salary covers 52 weeks and exclude overtime and bonus.

·        Confirm the basic salary, contracted paid hours, breaks and rota.

·        Separate guaranteed allowances from bonus, overtime and one-off joining payments.

·        Ask for the bonus formula and evidence of typical attainment in comparable roles.

·        Compare holiday, pension, sick pay, training commitments and any repayment conditions.

·        For employers, review existing team pay alongside a new recruitment offer.

For a management, master technician, VDA or specialist role without a comparable benchmark here, request an individual review of the responsibilities and local vacancies. This guide does not fill gaps with unsupported salary bands.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a vehicle technician earn in the UK?

The National Careers Service gives a broad motor mechanic range of £22,000 for starters to £42,000 for experienced workers. It is career guidance, not a 2026 median. Compare local offers by basic pay, contracted hours and additional earnings. [S01]

What is the published HGV technician salary range?

The National Careers Service heavy vehicle technician profile gives £26,000 to £55,000 a year from starter to experienced level. Check each offer’s shift pattern and whether allowances or overtime are included. [S02]

Is OTE the same as guaranteed salary?

For offer comparison, treat OTE as the advertised total at target performance. Ask the employer to identify the guaranteed basic and explain exactly which conditions apply to the remaining amount. Do not budget on a contingent bonus as though it were fixed pay.

Are these Auto Skills UK average salaries?

No. This guide combines external career ranges with individually cited vacancy examples. It does not calculate a representative Auto Skills UK average or median.

Does this guide forecast pay rises in 2027?

No. The 2026/27 title identifies the planning period. The evidence was checked on 2 October 2026; future salary movements are not assumed.
